The Walfrid Kujala Commission
In the summer of 2001, Randal Huiskens was honored to be commissioned by Sherry Kujala, wife of Chicago Symphony Orchestra flutist Walfrid Kujala, to create a piece of art for the invitation to Walfrid's retirement party. The final piece was an impressionist rendition of a piccolo and a flute, with the piccolo laying across the flute to show the prominence of the piccolo in Walfrid's career. Two versions were actually painted; one a colorful version with a circular background motif, and a more reserved version with the colors subdued in a duotone of siennas and purples. The latter was chosen for the final piece, for which Randal also designed a logotype and laid out the text, including a photo-bio of Walfrid Kujala's career.
The size of the final piece was 14 x 32". The invitation was printed in a 4 color litho process and mailed to attendees rolled in a tube. With a guest list of up to 1000 people, many of them internationally known music figures, it is safe to say this invitation was delivered to many corners of the world.
